Argyle is known as the
"Gateway to Yellowstone Lake". The 450 acre lake is part of the
Yellowstone Lake State Park, which is only one of the area attractions for those
who love the outdoors. Argyle has several recreational opportunities during all
seasons of the year.
Leisure/Recreation Opportunities
- Argyle Legion Community
Park
Located at the north side of the village, the American Legion Community Park
was created in the late 1940's through the efforts of the American Legion. The
park is now operated by the village. Within the park is a baseball field, a
softball and youth ball field, lighted tennis courts, sand pit
volleyball courts, two shelter houses, and playground equipment.
In
1993, through a cooperative effort between the village and the school
district, new playground equipment was installed in the park. New lighted
basketball courts were added just south of the school, located next to the
park.
- Argyle Boat Launch
The
village also operates a small park and boat landing on the East Branch of the
Pecatonica River off Highway 81 just west of the bridge. This launch affords
many opportunities for fishing and canoeing north of Argyle. Many area
residents enjoy canoeing from "Thunder Bridge" north of Argyle, past the
beautiful Pine covered rocky bluffs along the winding Pecatonica River to
Argyle. The 2-3 hour downstream journey is well worth the effort to see the
abundance of wildlife that lives at rivers edge. Another canoe trip
available is the downstream trip from Argyle to Bloody Lake at the Blackhawk
Memorial County Park near Woodford, WI. This 2 to 3 hour trip by canoe
takes you down the winding route through the rich farmland between Argyle and
Woodford.
Either canoe trip can be accomplished with
the help of Yellowstone Valley Canoe Rental by calling (608)543-3220 or
(608)214-7229.

water and is surrounded by rolling hills typical of this area of the state.
In
addition to the lake, there are 850 acres in the state park on the northern
shore of the lake. The state also owns and manages an adjoining 3,700-acre
wildlife area.
